About the role
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) seeks an International Consultant to lead a structured analysis of demographic shifts across 14 Pacific Island countries and territories. The role focuses on how demographic trends intersect with socio‑economic and environmental megatrends, providing evidence and strategic recommendations for UNFPA’s demographic resilience strategy.
Key responsibilities
- Design and launch the analytical study, confirming analytical questions, data sources, and workplan.
- Compile and synthesize demographic data from censuses, surveys, civil registration, and international datasets, documenting trends in fertility, mortality, migration, urbanisation and age structure.
- Map national population, youth, gender and sectoral policies, identifying entry points for anticipatory governance.
- Develop a practical Pacific demographic resilience assessment framework with quantitative and qualitative indicators.
- Conduct virtual stakeholder consultations with governments, regional bodies, civil society and academia, and integrate feedback into the final analysis.
- Produce strategic, time‑bound recommendations and concise briefing materials for senior decision‑makers.
Required profile
- Advanced university degree (master’s or equivalent) in demography, population studies, economics, sociology, public policy, statistics, geography or a related field; doctoral degree is an asset.
- At least 10 years of progressively responsible experience in demographic analysis, population and development, or public policy.
- Demonstrated expertise in analysing fertility, mortality, migration, urbanisation, ageing and population projections, including handling data limitations.
- Strong quantitative and mixed‑methods research skills with experience using census, survey and administrative demographic datasets.
